Silience is a series of hyper illusionistic paintings of abstract photographs. These obscure studies of detailed biological material lack any sense of clarity despite an abundance of information, and thereby capture an unfamiliar tension between specificity and uncertainty. Aluminum sheets of metal in various sizes were utilized in order to further push this notion of ambiguity, where the subject, scale, media, and technique are all meant to be unclear in order to create a confusing and disorienting visual experience. The title is also a reflection of this, as “Silience” is a familiar and phonetically sound word, however it’s meaning is indiscernible. These illusionistic but simultaneously elusive and undefinable paintings are meant to incite critical and creative thinking, in the hopes that viewers will attempt to look at their surroundings in new and unexpected ways.
